Not to be all pessimistic about love, but last night’s Mindy Project really drove home the old saying about things that seem to good to be true. Hint: NOPE.

Foreshadowing the later situation, Mindy is amazed to find herself in the rom-com friendly experience of an empty ice-skating rink playing Norah Jones songs after Josh slipped latino singles a “hundo”. It seemed perfect for about one minute, but of course it ended like this:

Yep, smelled that one coming right through the cold.

Fast forward about five minutes to what Mindy thought would be the perfect Christmas party with her perfect boyfriend.

[Note: I think they oversold Josh as the perfect guy--he’s cute-ish but weirdly pretentious and obsessed with energy drinks--but what made me suspicious was how like, (although that makes sense now), but suddenly he’s all, “Sure, let’s definitely host a Christmas part for your entire office together.” Uh huh. Anyway….]

Guess what happened? Disaster, of course, when his original girlfriend of two years showed up and Mindy realized she was his mistress. Ouch.

While I wish they’d gone a little easier on the girl-on-girl crime, I can’t deny Ellie Kemper was adorably insane with rage as Heather, the first girlfriend. And the show ended with two moments that made me feel warm inside despite the relationship pessimism. First, the touching and realistic show of support Mindy’s friends gave her after the kerfuffle. Be there for your friends, and they’ll be there for you.

But second, the hilarious twist on the only-happens-in-TV-and-movies staple, the “If we’re still single in five years” pact. Seriously, who does this in real life? No one, that's who. But who does it better than anyone ever has? Mindy, of course. “Danny, if we’re still single in five years and we haven’t found anybody, can we make a pact….that we will kill each other?” Bahahaha. I needed that laugh.

Have you ever had a similar, too good to be true situation? Did it blow up in your face? And for reals: Has ANYONE ever really made a "Let's get married if we're still 35 and single" pact? Seriously?
